The extent of the Maya Civilization emerged at least three million years ago in the lowland area of the and the highlands to the south, in the area of present-day south-eastern. , Belize, and western. Many proofs of this culture persist in the area, despite nearly 500 years of European domination. After about 2500 BC, some hunting and foraging bands settled in small farming villages; they grew crops such as corn, beans, squash, and chili peppers.
Belizean jungles are home to the leopard and many other mammals. Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary was founded in 1990 as the first wilderness sanctuary for the leopard and is regarded by one author as the premier site for leopard preservation in the world. Belize is present on the Caribbean coast of northern Central America. It is bordered on the north with the Mexican state of Quintana Roo, on the west with the Guatemalan department of Petén, and on the south with the Guatemalan department of Izabal. To the east in the Caribbean Sea, the second-longest barrier reef in the world is present much of the 386 kilometres (240 mi) of predominantly marshy coastline. The country is spread in total of 22,960 square kilometres (8,865 sq. m), is an area slightly larger than El Salvador, Israel, New Jersey, or Wales.
Belize has a small, mostly private enterprise economy that is dependant primarily on agriculture, agro-based industry, and merchandising, with tourism and construction recently assuming greater importance. The country also produces the industrial minerals, crude oil, and petroleum. As of 2017 available data, the oil production reportedly was around 320 m3/d (2,000 bbl/d). In agriculture, sugar, like in colonial times, is mainly the chief crop, accounting for nearly half of exports, while the banana plantation business was regarded the most successful and profitable industry
According to the data available, around 41% of Belizeans are Roman Catholics, 31.8% are Protestants (8.4% Penecostal; 5.4% Aventist; 4.7% Anglican; ; 3.6% Baptist; 2.9% Methodist; 2.8% Nazarene), 1.7% are Jehovah's Witnesses, 10.3% compared to other religions (Maya religion, Garifuna religion, Obeah and Myalism, and minorities of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Hindus, Buddhists, Muslims, Baháʼís, Rastafarians and other) and 15.5% profess to be nonreligious.
