Belgium is in Western Europe. It is surrounded by the Netherlands to the north, Germany to the east, Luxembourg to the southeast, France to the southwest, and the North Sea to the northwest. The capital and largest city is Brussels; other big cities are Antwerp, Ghent, Charleroi, Liège, Bruges, Namur, and Leuven.
Belgium has the borders France (620 km), Germany (167 km), Luxembourg (148 km) and the Netherlands (450 km). Its total surface, including water area also, is 30,689 km2 (11,849 sq. mi). Before 2018, its total area was calculated to be 30,528 km2 (11,787 sq. mi). It is situated between latitudes 49°30' and 51°30' N, and longitudes 2°33' and 6°24' E.
The territory of Belgium is made divisions into three Regions, two of which, the Flemish Region and Walloon Region, are in turn subdivided into provinces; the third Region, the Brussels Capital Region, is not even a province nor a part of a province.
Belgium has three official known languages: Dutch, French and German. A number of unofficial minority languages are spoken as well. As no data exists, there are no official statistical data regarding the distribution or usage of Belgium's three official languages or their dialects. Since the country's independence, Roman Catholicism has had a major role in Belgium's politics. However Belgium is largely a secular country as the constitution provides the freedom of religion, and the government generally follows this right in practice. During the reigns of Albert I and Baudouin, the Belgian royal family had a name of deeply rooted Catholicism
