The Bahamas officially known as the Commonwealth of The Bahamas is a country within the limits of Lucayan Archipelago of the West Indies. The state has more than 700 islands and is located north of Cuba. Nassau is its capital and it covers an area of 470,000 square kilometers. Inhabited by the Lucayans. Columbus was the first one to discover the island. The Spanish enslaved the people from Bahamas to Hispaniola , due to which Bahamas became deserted from 1513 to 1648.The country was under slavery under different rule and finally gained governmental independence in 1973.
The Taino people were the first to occupy Bahamas who moved to southern islands from Hispaniola and Cuba which was uninhabited around 800s-1000s A.D . They were known as Lucayan after migration from South America. 30,000 Lucayans were there in Bahamas during the arrival of Columbus.
The island has majority of Christians. Protestants, Baptists ,Anglicans, Pentecostals ,Seventh-day Adventists, Church of God are some of other communities present in that region. Smaller communities of Jews, Muslims, Hindus, Rastafarians are also present. English is its official language. Bahamian dialect is called as English-based creole language spoken by certain group of people. A French-based creole language called Haitian Creole contribute to 25% of the population.
