HISTORY OF AZERBAIJAN INTRODUCTION

Azerbaijan is located at the boundary of Eastern Europe and Western Asia. It is the first secular democratic state with the majority of people belonging to the Muslim community. One of six independent Turkic states, Azerbaijan is a unitary semi-presidential republic. Azerbaijan is a developing country with a Human Developing Rank of 88.

EARLY MIGRATIONS:

Traces of human life dates back to the late Stone age and is based on the Guruchay culture of Azykh Cave. Scythians were the first to settle in Azerbaijan during the 9th century BC. Iranian Medes followed the Scythians and dominated the south of the Aras river region between 900 and 700 BC which became the Achaemenid Empire in 550 BC. Achaemenids were responsible for spreading Zoroastrianism in those regions.

AGRICULTURE:

Azerbaijan has the largest agricultural land. Nearly 4,755,100 hectares of the agricultural area were present at the beginning of 2007. Azerbaijan's agricultural scientific research institutes gave importance to the development of meadows and pastures, horticulture, viticulture, cotton. In some regions growth of grain, potatoes, sugar was more profitable.

TOURISM:

Tourism contributes to the major economy of Azerbaijan. The country is well known for its tourist spots. The country had more number of tourist visits and overnight stays. Azerbaijan has become a favorite destination of religious spas and health care tourism.

PLACES TO VISIT:

One must not miss these places if one has traveled to Azerbaijan. Baku, which lies along the Caspian Sea is famous for its skyscrapers. Icheri Seher, known as “Old City” and “Fortress”, it is one of leading world heritage site where one can stroll leisurely. Absheron National Park which is a perfect place to witness Azerbaijan’s flora and fauna. Garasu Volcano, known to known to spill mud over 1,000 metres into the air.The Country is known for many such mud volcanoes. Naftalan Oil Resort, visitors bathe in the oil or to undergo a range of oil based treatments in this resort. Gobustan which is known as Azerbaijan version of Stonehenge in U.K has a circle of stones that have been positioned vertically and Azerbaijan is known for many such tourist spots.
