HISTORY OF ANGOLA INTRODUCTION

Angola situated on the West coast of South Africa. Being the second largest Portuguese speaking country and the Seventh largest country in Africa, has Luanda as its capital. The country is known for its enormous amounts of mineral and petroleum reserves and its economy is one of the fastest growing in the world. Having a population of 31.83 million , Angola is a multicultural and multiethnic country.

EARLY MIGRATIONS:

Nomadic Khoi and San, who were hunter gatherers were the first people to occupy Angola .Then the Bantu people who were originally from Northwestern Nigeria and Southern Niger took their place and they introduced cultivation of bananas and taro.

RELIGION AND LANGUAGE:

There are 1000 communities known in Angola ,mostly Christian where more than half of the population are Catholics. Portuguese is the official language of the country. However Umbundu, Kimbundu and Kikongo are most widely spoken indigenous languages.

CULTURE:

Angola follows the Portuguese culture in terms of language and religion, while the other modern ethnic groups follow the Bantu culture. Ovimbundu, Ambundu, Bakongo, Chokwe, Mbunda are the other ethnic communities.

AGRICULTURE:

Before independence in 1975, Angola was a major exporter of bananas, coffee. But the civil war destroyed the fertile countryside .At present the World bank states that less than 3% of Angola’s fertile soil is cultivated and the forestry sector needs to be developed to improve the economy of the country.

THE “MUST” SEE PLACES OF ANGOLA:

One must not miss to see the certain places in Angola. Few of which are, Luanda, the beautiful capital city of Angola known for its Atlantic Ocean. Kissama,70 km south from Luanda is Parque Nacional de Kissama, a wildlife sanctuary that has preserved many African species. The Tunda Vala Fissure, found between the cities of Lubango and Namibe. Dilolo Lake, mythical lake can be found in Mexico, eastern Angola . It is the largest lake and serves as an important tourist spot. Dala Waterfalls, The waterfalls that can be viewed from a bridge near the base of the falls for those who enjoy the scenic beauty and many more.
