HISTORY OF ALGERIA INTRODUCTION

Algeria officially known as the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria covers the largest part of the total area of Africa is in the Maghreb region of North Africa. It occupies an area of 2,381,741 square meters with population of 44 million and is the ninth most populous country in Africa with Algiers being its capital city on the Mediterranean coast.

PRE-HISTORIC FINDINGS:

Archaeological findings as early as 200,000 B.C suggest hominid occupation in North Africa. Algeria is site known for the development of Middle Paleolithic Flake tool techniques about 300,000 B.C and these tools are called as Aterian. The native population of Algeria were called Berbers who were originally from north Africa.

RELIGION AND LANGUAGE:

Islam is the prime religion of Algeria .Sunni Muslims contribute to the major share of the population ,However Christians ,mainly Protestants do exist in Algeria . The modern Arabic and Berbers are the official languages. Although Berbers has been recognized as the national language. French is widely used by the government , media ,education systems due to Algeria’s colonial history. It is also called as Lingua Franca of Algeria.

CUISINE

Known as the “Granary of Rome”, Algerian cuisine is diverse and varies from region to region. People mostly eat meat, fish , vegetables . Couscous chorba, rechta, chakhchoukha, berkoukes are some dishes ,Algeria is known for. Cakes are also prepared at home and marketed . Tamina, Baklawa, Chrik, Garn logzelles, Griouech are some of traditional cakes often prepared by the citizens of Algeria.

WHAT ARE PLACES THAT ONE SHOULD NOT MISS:

Places to visit in Algeria include, Atakor which is known for the highest peak called Assekrem Plateau, Oran known for its Le Theatre and a great number of mosques. Annaba, also called as the natural port since it has different ports. Ghardaia , located in the middle of Sahara Desert and is covered by sand from all sides. Constantine, one should not miss the scenic beauty of the entire area is vastly spread over a huge space. Djanet, a seaside town in the heart of Algeria known for its beautiful rock collections are the places one must definitely visit.
